Human trafficking sounds like a slightly less disturbing term that slavery, but it has the exact same horrific meaning and it is a $32 billion global industry.
It has been estimated that approximately 27 million people are living as slaves in the world today. More than at any other time in history! In the U.S. alone, the numbers are estimated in the hundreds of thousands.
It is a horrific situation and Truckers Against Trafficking have united with other travellers to learn how they can assist in bringing this appalling state of affairs to a stop.
The definition of modern human trafficking is when people are bought and sold and moved around. International statistics most definitely included the United States. Conservative estimates have been released revealing that 17,000 people are victims of trafficking into the U.S. every year. Within the border of the United States, the estimates of people being trafficked are astounding, and measure between 200,000-300,000 every year.
It is a sad fact that even though this activity is obviously illegal, it is also a booming business and follows closely behind the illegal drug industry, taking advantage mostly of women and children who usually end up working against their will in the sex industry.
These people can often be seen on the streets and at truck stops. Such people need our help. They need to be identified and rescued.
